Clinical Pilates

BLUFF & NORTH ROAD PHYSIOTHERAPY UTILISES CLINICAL PILATES AS PART OF ITS 1:1 AND GROUP REHABILITATION AND INJURY PREVENTION EXERCISE PROGRAM.

“In ten sessions you will feel the difference, in twenty you will see the difference, and in thirty you will have a whole new body” – Joseph H.

Pilates is a method of exercise that is based on the key elements of mindful movement, core stability and muscular endurance. Bluff & North Road Physiotherapy offer Clinical Pilates classes in a 1:1 or small group setting. Each client receives an individualised program after an assessment session, that is based on their body, pathology or injury, and specific needs and goals.

Types of clients that commonly participate in our Clinical Pilates program include:

  • Those with an injury or Chronic Pain – when the body experiences pain, pathology or injury, the body adopts faulty movement patterns to offload the painful and weak tissues, creating muscular imbalances. Pilates aims to strengthen the small postural muscles to aid these imbalances, and improve core stability, to enable a pain-free and physically active lifestyle. Recent research shows that 2 45-minute Clinical Pilates sessions a week significantly reduces the disability of chronic back and neck pain.

  • Athletes and Dancers – Pilates offers the perfect cross-train for your sporting needs, by optimising your biomechanics and strength, to reduce risk of injury and enhance performance.

  • Pre & Post Natal Women – a woman’s body journeys through many changes during this significant time, and Pilates has become a gold standard means of exercise to help the body through these stages. With a physiotherapist’s knowledge of the changes that occur in hormones and posture, and the current exercise guidelines for pre and post natal women, you can feel reassured knowing that you are exercising in a safe and beneficial manner.

  • Older Adults – staying active is pertinent to the independence and quality of life for older adults. No matter what age, Pilates improves balance and functional strength, and can be made as easy or difficult as desired.

  • Those looking for Muscular Tone, Improved Fitness and Strength – the Australian Physical Activity Guidelines recommends that adults participate in at least 2 resistance training sessions per week, for an abundance of benefits including prevention of injury and disease, stronger bones, improved cardiovascular health, and psychological well being. Once the correct movement patterns are achieved, Pilates can be used to strengthen and tone your muscles, and increase your heart-rate for the perfect workout.

The Process:

At Bluff & North Road Physiotherapy, all clinical Pilates classes are run by our physiotherapists who are trained in clinical Pilates. An initial assessment is necessary, where injury history, level of activity and goals are discussed, and a thorough assessment of your posture and how your body moves is observed. Your physiotherapist will then teach you a handful of carefully selected exercises. This session is followed up with a subsequent 30m appointment to refine your program. From this point on, it is up to you whether you would like to enter the group classes (4 people maximum), or continue private 30m sessions. At Bluff & North Road, we offer the unique opportunity to utilise the equipment once you have mastered your program in an unsupervised setting. This allows increased flexibility in participation, and an affordable way to commit to extra sessions each week. It is recommended that you check in regularly with your physiotherapist for a 30m Pilates review every 8-12 weeks, so that your program can continuously be updated and progressed outside of the group sessions.
