GLA:D Program

What is it?

Osteoarthritis is the most common lifestyle disease in individuals over 65 years of age and affects around 1 in 5 Australians. GLA:D (Good Living with OsteoArthritis: Denmark) is an education and exercise program developed by researchers in Denmark for people with hip or knee osteoarthritis symptoms.

The program aims to improve the care of people with hip and/or knee osteoarthritis as recommended by international treatment guidelines.

Benefits of GLA:D may include:

  • Reduction in the perceived need for surgery

  • Improvement in your ability to participate more actively in work and recreational activities

  • Reduced joint pain and analgesia consumption

The program runs over a six week period and consists of the following:

  • An initial appointment with one of our physiotherapists, to discuss details of the program (including your personal goals, collection of baseline data and enrollment in the GLA:D database.

  • Two weekly 1hr group exercise sessions – aimed at improving strength, quality of movement and confidence in the affected joint/s.

  • Two education sessions over the course of the six weeks – which cover topics such as disease pathology, risk factors, treatment options, physical activity recommendations and self-coping strategies.

  • A review at 3-months to discuss your progress and goals, and re-measure your functional ability.

  • Completion of an online questionnaire at the time of registration and again at 3 and 12 months to measure changes in affected areas such as pain, function, quality of life and medication use.
