When the sensory mechanism in the inner ear that detects movement of the head and helps to control balance is damaged it can cause:

  • Dizziness and associated nausea
  • Vertigo
  • Balance Problems

Many people are able to recover from these symptoms on their own after a few weeks of normal activity because the brain has adapted with a process called vestibular compensation.

However vestibular compensation may not always be successful and can cause headaches, muscle tension, and fatigue.  Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT) is often required to facilitate this process ensuring minimal vertigo dizziness, fatigue and functional impairment.

Causes of Vestibular Dysfunction

Causes include:

  • Head injury
  • Ageing
  • Viral infection
  • Other illnesses
  • Genetic and environmental factors

Our physiotherapists can use Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT) to treat your dizziness, balance or vertigo issues.
